Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania

Colobus and Sykes’ Monkeys, myriad bird species, darting duiker, giant lobelia and groundsel plants, volcanic rock draped with lichen, wild alpine flowers, hanging glaciers and barren snow – all this to take in for the determined hiker that takes on the challenge of Kilimanjaro.

Kilimanjaro is looming, brooding, mysterious and simply vast.  The pre-historic story of this incredible mountain body features buckling plains, magma erupting from fractures and faults, venting volcanoes, eroded volcanic cones and vast calderas filled with bubbling black lava – and out of all this, it was Kibo which emerged victorious, rising some 5985 metres above her sisters, Shira and Mawenzi.

Each of the five plant zones of Mount Kilimanjaro (lower slopes, forest, heath and moorland, highland desert and summit) are moulded by  Kilimanjaro’s unique features, with the climate, vegetation and wildlife all affected by the location on an open plain, so close to the Indian Ocean, and the sheer size and height of Kilimanjaro itself.  It is cool under the shadows of the forest canopy on the lower slopes to the forest zone, listening to the chirruping and hooting of forest birds, whilst giant boulders  dot the landscape of the moorland zone.  The ice fields are sparse and barren, whilst the summit is simply stunning, as jagged peaks and rocks spike through the early morning canopy of clouds.

Aside from the mountain itself, there are beautiful surrounds which are also included within the boundaries of Kilimanjaro National Park.  There is trout fishing, the beautiful Chala crater lake, and the nature trails on the lower reaches, or even just outside the borders of the park itself, are beautiful, tranquil and very rewarding.
