Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area, Tanzania

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most wondrous places you will ever visit.  Part of Tanzania’s Crater highlands, the main focal point of the area is the Ngorongoro Crater – 260 kilometres, lush and green, ancient, and the scene of so much wildlife drama.

The crater itself, which was formed when a huge volcano collapsed some 2-3 million years ago, has steep, 2000ft high walls, which greatly inhibit migration in and out of the crater.  The concentration of wildlife is therefore very high, with the densest known population of lions inhabiting the crater floor.  Other wildlife which can be found in the area include black rhinoceros, leopard, elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, Thompson’s gazelle, waterbuck, serval, hartebeest, jackal, hyena and cheetah.

The topography varies greatly within the conservation area, and even within the crater itself.  The crater floor is largely open grassland, with several pockets of woodland, the eastern side of the crater highlands is mostly covered with montane forest, whilst the western side is mostly grassland and bushland.  There is a seasonal lake in the centre of the crater, known as Makat or Magadi.

Within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the famous Olduvai Gorge.  Known as the cradle of humanity, this is where the earliest known specimens of the human genus was discovered during extensive excavations of the area.  The pioneers of these excavations, which began in the 1950s, were Mary and Louis Leakey.  The Olduvai Museum, dedicated to their work and passion, is well worth a visit.
