The name 236 Hurumzi has been synonymous with style, elegance and old-town magic since its opening.  Rising up with Stone Town’s jumbled skyline of minarets, temple towers and church spires is the 236 Hurumzi’s Tower Top Restaurant – a beacon of good taste and hospitality in the centre of town.

The hotel building itself is actually the second-tallest in Stone Town.  It was once the residence of one of the richest man in the Swahili Empire, and has since been restored to reflect this!  The decor is elegant, eclectic, and distinctly Swahili in style.

Each of the 24 rooms and suites at the 236 Hurumzi is individually styled and offers its own atmosphere and unique touches.  The Ballroom Suite, for example, is possibly the grandest of all hotel suites in Zanzibar, whilst the Keep Suite has a private wooden staircase leading to its own secluded “castle keep”.  The Gallery Room boasts lovely hand-painted windows, and the Lavender Room is decorated in various soothing shades of lavender.

The Tower Top Restaurant at the very top of the hotel offers a completely singular and very atmospheric dining experience.  The views are fantastic, and the food, with local vegetables, seafood, canapés, soup, salad, a range of main dishes, spiced rices, teas, coffees and delicious desserts, is fantastic too!

Kidude, named after Taraab legend Bi. Kidude, is the perfect choice for a light meal, sandwich, sweet treat or just a drink.  Morning coffee or afternoon tea is particularly delightful here, with a delicious baked pastry in a relaxed, authentic atmosphere.  Or, go for dinner to try one of the Indian, Arabic, African, Caribbean or South American inspired dishes.

Reviews & Testimonials of 236 Hurumzi

"Brimming with character"

We visited Zanzibar during the Eid weekend. The hotel had caught my eye a few years back when I had first considered visiting Zanzibar - it was then called Emersons and Green. Naturally it was the first hotel I considered when I finally got round to visiting Stone Town and it was not too hard to convince my friends that they too wanted to stay there. We were not disappointed. My friends and I stayed in the new wing. Each floor has its own door, lobby/seating area and kitchen, which made it feel like home. Each room is decorated in its own style but always with the beautifully crafted Zanzibar furniture. The staff were all very friendly and helpfully guided us through the windy, narrow lanes of the town to find whatever it was we wanted. The cherry on top of this cake is the rooftop restaurant where breakfast is served - the views are outstanding.

"Back in Time Stone Town, Zanzibar"

236 Hurumzi is THE place to stay. The former home of a Sultan, it is full of character, with carved doors, colorful concrete tubs, antique furniture and beautiful gardens.
The rooftop restaurant/bar is the perfect spot for sunset. One of the highest points in the city, the view over the rooftops of Stone Town, and all the way to the wooden dhows on the ocean, cannot be duplicated. The evening call to prayer echoes from every corner as the gossamer red and gold fabric on the ceiling billows in the breeze.
The staff were very friendly and helpful.
It truly felt like I had entered an earlier time and place. A MUST stay.
