Mount Kilimanjaro Trek - Machame

From: $1,659 per person (8 days, 7 nights)

kilipic3
For those who have the time, a sense of adventure and are prepared for a tougher hike, the Machame route offers stunning, almost picture-book scenery along the way.  Accommodation is in tents throughout.  With the highly-recommended extra acclimatisation day, making this a 7-day hike, this route is particularly rewarding. However, this route can also be completed in 6 days.

The ascent through the forest begins almost immediately upon completing mountain formalities at the Machame Park Gate.  Hikers should keep their eyes and ears open for exotic birds, many of which are not found in lower altitudes, as well as Sykes’ and black-and-white colobus monkeys.  The forest is damp and so the path may become muddy.  Camping will be just above the forest belt, as the landscape begins to change into beautiful heath land.

The views of the Kilimanjaro peaks are simply breathtaking on this route.  Imagine the gleaming peaks, viewed from the surrounds of tall grasses, giant heathers, lobelia and groundsels, and vast volcanic boulders draped with beard-like lichen!  The landscape is alien, somehow eerie and completely stunning.

The Lava Tower is another highlight of this particular routing, and getting their is strenuous.  It is here that hikers will truly acclimatise, as they reach the tower at an altitude of some 4630 metres, before descending again into the Great Barranco Valley.  The camp at Barranco is enclosed on 3 sides with steep walls and the Kibo Peak massif itself.  The glaciers gleaming above you are as barren and intimidating as they are beautiful.

Continuing upwards, the final overnight before the summit attempt will be at Barafu Camp, where the temperatures are very cold and the landscape is very sparse.

Around midnight, you will wake for some tea and biscuits before making the final push to Uhuru – the hiker’s summit.  The peak will be reached as dawn nears – just in time to witness the pale sun rising over a new day in Africa.  This is the reward for you hard work.

  • The price includes a pre-climb overnight in Arusha.  Depending on your schedule and wishes we can also offer pre-climb accommodation in Moshi or Marangu
  • Accommodation during the climb is in tents at mountain campsites throughout
  • Included in the price is full board and drinking water, an experienced Kilimanjaro team with guide, porters and cook, storm-proof mountain tent, mattress, mess tent and toilet tent
  • The pricing and itinerary is based on the 7-day routing.  Get in touch for information and pricing on the 6 or 8 day routing
