Out of Africa

This programme was specially designed to recreate that “Out-of-Africa” feeling – taking in Tanzania on foot as well as in a vehicle.  It is for those people who have no interest in rushing from one place to the next, for those people who want to experience Africa and not just “tick the box”.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro, your first stop will be at the beautiful Momella lakes, where the views of both Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru are dramatic and awe-inspiring.  You’ll have a full day here to explore the area however you so wish – on a boat on the Momella lakes, walking at Mount Meru crater, birding in the bird-rich lands between Kilimanjaro and Meru...and more.

Your first glimpse of the Serengeti will come through the window of your bush plane as you come into land at Seronera airstrip.  Upon the vast, apparently never-ending plains you might see a dust  cloud swirling in the air, kicked up by a group of agitated wildebeest, or a herd of buffalo, dark, stoic and almost motionless except for rhythmic chewing and the occasional flick of the tail.  During your two full days in this, the world’s most famous animal sanctuary, you will continue on your pursuit of the “Big Five.”

At the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you will experience the Ngorongoro crater from each possible way – driving down the steep walls, taking a day’s game drive in the crater bottom – a veritable Eden of Africa in itself, and walking at the rim of the crater marvelling at birds, monkeys and whatever else you may happen across.

Your final nights on safari will be spent exploring the corridor between Tarangire and Lake Manyara – an area rich with game and ripe for exploration.  Once again your time here can be spent as you wish, making your own itinerary – on walking safaris, game drives both during the day and the night, cultural excursions to local villages and farms.  This is a truly special chance to learn and experience, not just see and do.

Accommodation for the discerning safari-goer

Hatari Lodge epitomises everything we want this safari to be – unique, authentically Africa, immersed in natural beauty, and somehow reminiscent of a lost era of the romantic, adventurous safari.   At Hatari, the Momella Lakes, Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro provide the views, the passionate and dedicated owner-managers provide the singular and welcoming atmosphere, and the team of experienced guides provide the specially developed safari activities.  There is no shortage of things to do here – exploring swamps and forests, hiking on ancient volcanic craters, birding in the foothills of Mount Meru...and after an active day, return to the lodge to bask in the retro surroundings and soak up the warmth of a roaring fire.

Upon arrival in Mapito from your bush flight to Seronera airstrip in the Serengeti, you will be greeted with luxury tents, delicious and fresh cuisine and a crackling campfire – all on the ever-stretching plains of the Serengeti.  Mapito will provide warmth, comfort and authentic safari lodging throughout your stay in this stunning corner of the world.

The Serena Lodge at Ngorongoro perches on the western rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, offering utterly beautiful views of the sun rising over Tanzania – the perfect sight to rejuvenate and awaken the senses before embarking on an early morning game drive!  The pool, too, seems to jut precariously over the crater’s edge, providing a thrill during your afternoon cool-down dip.  This, along with beautiful and spacious rooms, delicious and hearty meals and attentive staff combine to make this the perfect choice for the discerning safari-goer.

Concluding your safari at Manyara Ranch, you will experience a tailor-made wildlife programme with a flair of luxury.  Discuss your preferences and wishes with the camp manager and guide – take a chilled white wine out on your night-time game drives, spotting a night prowling cheetah.  Explore the wildlife rich corridor on foot, escorted by your knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide.  Or simply lie in your luxuriously furnished tent, watching zebra and wildebeest wander past your window.
